Overview

Less logistics, more meals

F4 serves as an unpaid broker, building sustainable partnerships and coordinating the logistics of food donations on behalf of nonprofits that feed the hungry. Working behind the scenes, F4 connects businesses that have excess food with community organizations that can put it to use right away.

By simplifying logistics and coordinating volunteers, F4 helps ensure nutritious food reaches the people who need it instead of going to waste. To support its growing mission, F4 partnered with Solstice Innovation to design and build the F4 Operations Hub, a centralized platform that streamlines donation logistics, volunteer coordination, and communications.

About F4

Connecting surplus food with the people who need it

F4 works with local businesses that want to give back by donating excess food. Its donation partners include:

Grocery stores and markets Food distributors Restaurants Caterers Schools and universities Corporate cafeterias Community organizations Food drive sponsors

Alongside recurring donations, F4 organizes food drives and community partnerships that support local nonprofits serving individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. These efforts reduce food waste while strengthening communities and expanding access to nutritious meals.

The Challenge

Coordination that outgrew spreadsheets

As F4’s network of donors, volunteers, and nonprofit partners grew, so did the complexity of coordinating pickups, deliveries, schedules, and communications. Many daily activities ran on spreadsheets, emails, phone calls, and text messages, which added administrative effort and limited the organization’s ability to scale. F4 needed a solution that could:

The Solution

A hub built around F4’s mission

Solstice Innovation designed and built the F4 Operations Hub, a custom operations platform built specifically around F4’s mission and workflow.

Rather than forcing the organization to adapt to off-the-shelf software, we tailored the platform to how F4 actually operates, creating an intuitive experience for administrators, volunteers, donors, and nonprofit partners.

The result is a centralized hub that automates repetitive processes, improves communication, and helps the organization run more efficiently.

The Solstice Approach

SOLVE + BUILD + SCALE = IMPACT

SOLVE
Understand the mission, stakeholders, workflows, and operational challenges before recommending any technology.
+
BUILD
Develop practical solutions that simplify coordination, automate repetitive tasks, and improve communication across donors, volunteers, and partners.
+
SCALE
Pilot capabilities, gather feedback, measure outcomes, and refine before expanding to support future growth.
=
IMPACT
More time spent advancing the mission, and less spent managing logistics.

Technology should support the mission, not become the mission. That is how SOLVE + BUILD + SCALE becomes IMPACT.

What it changes day to day

Most importantly, it lets the F4 team spend less time managing logistics and more time advancing its mission of rescuing food and feeding people in need.

A Personal Connection

More than a consulting engagement

Some projects are personal. My wife, Gigi, and I have had the privilege of volunteering with F4 and supporting its mission through community fundraising, including our annual Solstice Music Festivals.

Through those experiences, we’ve seen firsthand the passion of the F4 team and the impact they make by connecting surplus food with local organizations serving families facing food insecurity.

That connection gave us real insight as we designed the F4 Operations Hub. The goal wasn’t simply to build software. It was to create practical technology that removes friction, simplifies logistics, and lets the F4 team focus on what matters most: building partnerships, rescuing more food, and strengthening the communities it serves.

The best technology is often invisible. It quietly removes friction, empowers people, and lets organizations focus on what they do best.

The F4 Operations Hub reflects that belief, using thoughtful technology to support a mission-driven organization whose impact reaches far beyond software. When you start with the mission, build practical solutions, and scale what works, innovation becomes impact.
